Secure Beginnings began as a research project to discover whether early intervention with pregnant women and continuing with the parent and infant after birth would make a difference in the long-term mental health of both mother and child. Special classes were developed at COR Northwest Family Development Center to train clinicians in this new clinical specialty, now called parent–infant psychoanalytic psychotherapy. Gradually a curriculum developed, becoming the present-day certificate program, which includes course work in British Object Relations and the psychological aspects of early development, beginning with prenatal life. Clinical training, required for certification, includes a year of Infant Observation and supervised psychoanalytic psychotherapy with a parent–infant dyad.
Our service program Secure Beginnings, please see http://www.securebeginnings.org/welcome.html
Secure Beginnings training has numerous applications. Some clinicians utilize their understanding of early development and the subtleties of the parent–infant relationship in their work with children and adults. Others make parent–infant work a subspecialty of their clinical practice, and receive referrals from birthing centers, hospital social workers, pediatricians, and parents who have participated in infant observation and the Listening Mothers educational group program. Whatever the application, it is clear that the future of psychoanalytic psychotherapy includes early intervention because of the benefit it provides in supporting the next generation of emotionally sturdy men and women.
Anyone with an interest in infant development is welcome to take classes at COR Northwest Family Development Center, and there is a special track for individuals who are not licensed clinicians and yet want to increase their understanding of the parent–infant relationship.
If you are interested in Secure Beginnings parent–infant psychoanalytic psychotherapy training, please contact Judy K Eekhoff, PhD-FIPA, Training Director for Secure Beginnings at (206) 328-5257.
COR Northwest Family Development Center and Secure Beginnings also sponsor adjunct courses and activities for the professional and lay public to broaden understanding of infant development and the parent–infant relationship. For instance, in 2003–04 we sponsored a film series called “Emotional Life – From the Beginning” to explore the nuances of emotional development and how it differs from cognitive and physical development.
We also sponsored a workshop on the topic of separation anxiety and how this is experienced by both infants and parents. Another series is planned for 2005-2006 following similar themes.
