British Object Relations has gained prominence because of its extensive original contributions to understanding how early emotional experiences become incorporated into personality. These early experiences become leading factors in healthy relatedness, emotional security, and empathy, as well as in mental suffering, primitive defenses, and interpersonal difficulties.
The first semester of this year long class provides a basis of theoretical understanding of British Object Relations Theory and Technique. Emphasis in the first portion of the seminar will be placed on learning the basic tenants of Freud’s theory of the mind in order to give the students a foundation from which to grasp the theoretical concepts that inform the practice of psychoanalytic psychotherapy from a British Object Relations perspective.
The second semester picks up where semester one left on moving forward into the intersection of Freud and Klein. This semester will look at how Klein followed Freud's thought of the mind and where she expanded her thinking. While using articles from those skillfully writing about Klein, such as Segal and Caper, the course will be predominantly Klein's own writings.
A Master degree in Psychology related field required for these classes.
