This one year course examines in detail the issues involved for the therapist
in establishing and maintaining a psychoanalytic role, listening to and
containing many levels of communication, and evaluating when, what, and how
to interpret. The therapist attends to the manifest and symbolic dimensions
of the material and puts those together with the countertransference and other
nonverbal communications. This course also emphasizes how the therapist works
internally with toxic and threatening communications leading to helpful and
empathic interpretation of transference, destructiveness, and regressive elements,
thus promoting integration and growth. Racker’s book “Transference and Countertransference” will provide the outline of the course complemented with articles by contemporary Kleinian authors. Every fourth session of the course will be a presentation of case material by a seminar participant, discussion of that material by the group and application of what we are learning.
Pre-requisites: PT 1 or equivalent working knowledge of Freud and Klein
